Home renovation

Spring brings freshness to home renovation

As we enter the spring and summer home design and decorating season, there are a number of things homeowners and homebuyers should consider when planning and making their design decisions and purchases.

Here are some helpful tips from our team of experts at Design Studio Interior Solutions:

1. The Colorado sun is strong and can heat up a room and discolor furniture and floors. South and west facing rooms need window treatments to tame those strong rays. Protect your space with programmable curtains, shutters or roller blinds.

2. Given Colorado’s unpredictable weather, outdoor furniture has to be heavy. Hailstorms and 60 mph winds happen often, so opt for outdoor furniture that has the weight to withstand the wind.

3. Hardwood floors are beautiful but need moisture to prevent warping, cracking and splitting. Opt for a whole-house humidifier.

Or better yet, consider engineered hardwood. It’s built to withstand 85 degrees one day and 30 degrees and snow the next, and is a nice alternative.

4. Performance fabrics are your friends. They come in every color and texture imaginable now and most stains will come out with plain soap and water. When shopping, be sure to ask for these fabrics.

5. Your family will be sitting on your couch every day, so make sure it’s well-made (and upholstered in a performance fabric). Great accent pieces are available for a variety of prices. We recommend splurging on the couch and saving on the cocktail tables.

6. The budget for a kitchen renovation can be around 10% of the current value of your home. So do some shopping and plan ahead for that pricier item.

7. With plumbing and light fixtures, what you can’t see is as important as what’s visible to you and your guests.

Plumbing fixture rough valves should be made of strong metal and durable materials. Same for the lighting. Since we cannot always see these things, we do not always consider how important they are.

8. Wallpaper is back, and it’s not your grandma’s wallpaper anymore. The colors, patterns and styles will inspire you to try it in a bathroom, dressing room or dining room.

9. Poufs are the most durable pieces of furniture in your home. They can prop up your feet, hold trays full of drinks, or serve as extra seating when needed. We have never met a beanbag that we didn’t like.

ten. Work with an interior designer – they know all the great new products, they understand the logistics of putting your home together, and they won’t let you make any mistakes. They are worth every penny!
