Nashville couple turn home renovation side project into TV show

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A Nashville couple stars in their own home improvement show on a brand new network. “Making Modern with Brooke and Brice” is streaming now. News 2’s Nikki Burdine got to see the stars behind the show up close.

Brooke Gilliam is a pharmaceutical representative and Brice Gilliam is an orthodontist, running his own practice called “Elevation Orthodontics”. But what makes them so unique is what they do after their daily work.

“What I do at work is very different from what I do in my free time,” says Brooke.

Brooke and Brice renovate the houses making them more functional and modern, which is probably the best way to describe their dynamic: Modern.

“I think it all comes down to the fact that we have reversed roles,” says Brooke. “So because I’m the builder, and he’s the designer, people kind of take a second take with that. They’re like, wait a minute, are you the builder?”

Brooke builds all of their projects and does the welding. Brice designs the spaces. “It’s so funny because every time someone talks about design, they’re talking to Brooke. And whenever someone talks about construction, they talk to me and we always look at each other laughing. So we do it, but we do it in a nice way,” says Brice.

They started making improvements to their own house and then to their friends’.

Their talents caught the eye of a producer living nearby, who made it all possible. “She’s like, ‘I’ve got a production team that I want to introduce you to.’ They decided they wanted to shoot a sizzle, and it landed in the hands of Chip and Joanna. And that’s kinda how it all happened,” says Brooke.

The driver was picked up by Chip and Joanna Gaines, who started the Magnolia Network. The show was aptly called “Making Modern with Brooke and Brice”.

“What we really do is personalize people’s homes,” says Brice. “Yes, sometimes that means we demonstrate, sometimes that means we tear down walls, but it also means we make the place perfect for them. So we are going to individualize it. It could be a new house that you just need help with to make it functional for you and look amazing.

They hope the show will inspire people to look beyond gender stereotypes and pursue their passions.

“I hope we break those glass ceilings and show people that there’s a new generation of women who are very empowered and want to use power tools as well,” Brooke says.
