Chances are you’ve been spending more time than usual in your kitchen this year (thanks, pandemic), and if the space looks a little stale, it might be time to upgrade. Kitchen remodeling is always a popular home project because this room gets more use than most, and as an added bonus, a new kitchen can add a lot of value to your home if you decide to sell down the line.

However, the question is always where to focus your efforts. We wanted to know the most popular kitchen remodel ideas for 2021, so we asked some of our favorite interior designers for advice. Here are the trends they think will be important in the coming year.

1. Switch to smart devices

Most kitchen appliances should last about 10 years, and if yours is nearing the end of its life, it might be time to replace it. If you’re looking for new kitchen appliances, you should definitely take a look at today’s smart appliances, which can be controlled via a smartphone.

For example, Samsung offers a line of smart fridges that feature its “Family Hub”. This touchscreen lets you create shopping lists and calendars, and it can also display photos and play music. Samsung and other major appliance brands also offer smart cookers, dishwashers, and more.

2. Create an “Appliance Garage”

You can store appliances out of sight with an appliance garage.

Most people have at least one or two small appliances that live on the kitchen counter — for me, that’s my KitchenAid stand mixer and toaster. However, if you’re tired of seeing them all the time, you can hide them away with this cool cabinet feature.

“We’re seeing a lot of people add electrical appliance garages or pantries so ugly appliances don’t have to sit on your counters,” says Anne Carr of Anne Carr Design.

This convenient design feature allows you to hide away your small appliances, while keeping them easily accessible.

3. Design a custom range hood

You can build a custom range hood around a sleek insert.

You can add some style to your kitchen with a custom range hood: “Forget the stainless steel range hood! recommends Kate Lester of Kate Lester Interiors. “We like to use a range hood insert instead and then design a custom hood around that. You can use plaster, strapping or other wood trim details to create a focal point that is an additional design element in the kitchen.

Built-in hoods from brands like Bertazzoni give you maximum air extraction power over your cooker – important if you’re known to occasionally burn things up when cooking – while also allowing you to customize the appearance of your kitchen.

4. Extend the cabinets to the ceiling

Extend your cabinets all the way to the ceiling for a more modern look.

Many kitchen cabinets stop a foot or less from the ceiling, but why? You can create a more seamless design in your kitchen by extending them all the way.

“If you’re designing a kitchen, more than likely your cabinets will need to be custom made,” says Lester. “So why not take advantage of any extra storage space by bringing the cabinets up to the ceiling?” These upper areas are great places to store things that you only use seasonally.

Some people also opt for glass fronts on their tallest cabinets, creating the perfect safe space to display your favorite fine china pieces and other decorations.

5. Incorporate mixed metals

Some people need all the metal in their kitchen to match, but if you’re open to a more eclectic look, you can try mixing and matching different metal finishes.

Try using unique metallic finishes in your kitchen.

“Gone are the days when only one or two types of metal could be used in the same space,” says Tiffany Leigh Piotrowski of Tiffany Leigh Design. “Lately, we’ve been enjoying a mix of brass, nickel, and black metals in the same kitchen space for a layered, put-together look.”

Today’s top hardware brands like Moen and Kohler offer kitchen faucets and other kitchen accessories in a variety of finishes, from black and white to champagne and brass.

6. Add appliances under the counter

Undercounter appliances are becoming increasingly popular.

Dishwashers aren’t the only appliances that can be installed under your kitchen counters. You can put this space to good use with a drawer fridge, which gives you more room for cold drinks, fresh produce, etc., or even a drawer microwave. It’s a great way to clear your counters, giving you more space for food prep and serving.

7. Embrace the “New Neutrals”

Painting cabinets is an easy way to update your kitchen.

If you’re tired of those white kitchen cabinets, you can switch things up a bit with a warmer shade of paint.

“We’ve been telling our customers for some time now that while a crisp white kitchen will always be classic, warmer, softer tones in mushroom, beige and putty will be the most popular choices for cabinet color. in the future,” says Piotrowski.

8. Throw the porcelain on the sidewalk

This sink looks like concrete, but is much easier to maintain.

Looking for a new kitchen sink, but not sure what you want? Designers say porcelain sinks aren’t as popular anymore – instead, people are opting for low-maintenance sinks made from contemporary materials.

“In kitchen design, we’re seeing a move away from porcelain sinks,” Carr says. “People are experimenting with concrete or engineered materials. Blanco, for example, makes a sink with a material called “SILGRANIT”. It is available in a variety of colors and provides a maintenance-free concrete look.
